Do my children need sunglasses?

Alexandra in SunGlassesDid you know that most people get half of their life time exposure to ultraviolet light (UV) before they are 18 years old?  A growing body of evidence shows that your life time exposure to ultraviolet light is one of the causes of many aging conditions of the eye.  Cataracts, macular degeneration and various forms of skin cancer all are caused at least in part by exposure to UV light.

You probably slather your child with #50 sunscreen before a day at the beach, but how can you get UV protection for a child’s visual system.  If your child wears glasses to correct vision the correct choice of lens material should include UV protection.  Even some types of contact lenses can include UV protection.  But how about kids with perfect eyes?

Just like grownups, a child will benefit from the increased comfort and glare reduction that quality sun wear can provide.  Sunglasses should provide “UV 400” this means that all damaging UV light is being blocked by the lens.
