Low Vision Aids Help Some Patients with Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration can have serious implications for vision in older patients.  This disease, which affects the central retina can impact tasks that require fine vision such as reading and sewing. Even the simplest tasks such as cooking and paying bills can become difficult for the macular degeneration patient.  Fortunately these patients can often be helped with specially prescribed glasses and other aids ranging from closed circuit television systems to hand-held magnifiers.  A host of other devices exist which can simplify many tasks.  Large print books, appropriate use of lighting and many other devices can help the macular degeneration patient remain independent.  While some of these devices are easily available over-the-counter, consultation with a low vision practitioner can help in the selection of the most appropriate devices for the patient.
