Annual retina exam is important for diabetics.

Complications from diabetes are a leading cause of blindness in the United States.   While newer treatments can give patients much better control of the disease than previously.  It is still important to have regular evaluations of the retina to check for diabetic changes.

In diabetics, the disease can weaken blood vessels in the back of the eye causing bleeding and permanent vision loss.  At Alameda Eyes Optometry, I use dilated examinations of the retina in combination with retinal photography to accurately monitor changes in retinal status for patients with diabetes.  With early detection, progression of these visual complications can often be slowed or eliminated with changes in therapy or laser surgery for diabetic retinopathy.
